Surgical eye camp Dailekh
Nepal Red Cross Society has been managing eye care services as a key component of health service in Karnali province (Former Mid-West Region) since 1990s through eye care centers (Surkhet, Dailekh, Jajarkot and Bardia) and outreach program with the support of Swiss Red Cross. In Initial stage, Surkhet eye hospital was as a primary eye care centre, established in 2046 at Birendranagar, Surkhet. Considering the increased demand for clinical and surgical services in the regional hub at Surkhet, the CECC upgraded as a surgical centre in 2009 and continued their surgical service up to 2014 by visiting Ophthalmologist once a month. The surgical centre was again upgraded as a Nepal Red Cross Society Surkhet Eye Hospital (NRCS SEH) completing the construction of hospital building with the financial support of Swiss Red Cross, Lindenhof foundation and Foundation Vision for All. The Foundation Vision for all was contributed CHF 98,000.00 for hospital building construction. The hospital service was functional from Jan 2015 by regular Ophthalmologists.

Birendranagar Surkhet is the capital of Karnali province has a population of 160 thousand as per 2078 census. Surkhet Eye hospital and its core dignitary team have given their timeless efforts since 1990 to uplift this center from community eye care center at Surkhet to a well-established hospital in 2015 as well as updated two prevailing primary eye care centers at Dailekh and Jajarkot. 5 eye care units as similar CECCs are integreted into local government health systems in collaboration with local government at Rukum west, Rakam Dailekh, Panchpuri Surkhet and Tripurasundari Dolpa.

Hospital Service
Nepal Red Cross Surkhet Eye Hospital started in Jan 2015 having 25 bedded with advance technology. The hospital provides high quality and affordable services to the rich and poor with Medical, surgical, optical, pharmacy, laboratory and investigation services. Annually, the hospital serves more than 100,000 Outpatient care with 4,239 sight restoring surgeries. CECCs at Dailekh, Jajarkot districts and Eye Care Unit (ECU), Vidhyapur Surkhet, Rukum, Dailekh and Dolpa districts are providing primary eye care service in respective districts as a wing of SEH. Outreach Service
Outreach service is an integral part of Surkhet Eye Hospital for hard to reach people. It provides doorstep eye care service to the community. Last year, more than 21,000 patients were treated and 1,388 restored eye sight from outreach camps in collaboration with TRKF, XOVA, NNJS integrated eye and ear project, Chaudhari group and local government. The major activities are;

- School vision program and free distribution of spectacles
- Eye care orientation FCHVs, HP personnel, teacher and RC volunteer Mass awareness program
- Broadcasting FM radio
- Distribution of brochure and poster

Surkhet Eye hospital and its core dignitary team have given their timeless efforts since 1990 to uplift this center from community eye care center at Surkhet to a well-established hospital in 2015 as well as updated two prevailing primary eye care centers at Dailekh and Jajarkot. 5 eye care units as similar CECCs are integreted into local government health systems in collaboration with local government at Rukum west, Rakam Dailekh, Panchpuri Surkhet and Tripurasundari Dolpa. I have had the opportunity to contribute to its humanitarian service since 2018 in Karnali province. With the slogan of ‘Everywhere for Everyone’, this hospital under Nepal Red cross in collaboration with Swiss Red cross aims to reach the unreached and encourage health education with emphasis on reduction of blindness and eye disease for a better quality of life. Being the first eye hospital in surkhet, our team makes every effort to identify the difficulties prevailing in eye care and upgrade service and facilities to reach the benchmark of eye care service. I personally have had a great opportunity to know the diversity of eye diseases prevailing in this population and have contributed my best to make an impact towards importance of eye care in uplifting quality of life. With the aim to continuously provide standardized comprehensive eye care to local population as well as through free surgical eye camps to 10 districts under this hospital, we prospect to exemplify eye care in Nepal and give a new vision to those in need.

Message From Chairman
Along with its establishment in Birendranagar, Surkhet in 2046 BS having the apparent purpose of reducing blindness among the people of different districts of Bheri and Karnali at the Mid-Western Region or the present Karnali Province with the economic and technical support of Swiss Red Cross and run by Nepal Red Cross, Eye Care Center has been providing eye care services with community outreach to restoring the sight in different places. Since 1 January, 2015 it has further extended its services from the new building built with the financial support of Swiss Red Cross, Foundation Vision for All and Lindenhof Foundation, and has been regularly providing comprehensive services by two Ophthalmologist. The hospital is further attempting to extend its quality services in a more systematic and accessible manner. In this context, I would like to give thanks to all the persons, donors, political personalities, social workers, organizations, business entrepreneurs, journalists as well as service takers who have contributed in upgrading this hospital's services with appropriate suggestions, true guidance and economic as well as technical support. I hope we will get continuous support, suggestions and guidance in the days to come too.
